Love is a Canoe both is the title of this novel and a self-help book, within the novel, celebrating its 40th anniversary.  In order to revive sales and interest in the book, the publishing company creates a contest in which a couple, who needs some marital advice, will win a dinner with Peter Herman, the author of the self-help book.   Emily submits the winning entry and Eli submits to the dinner.
